FAIRMONT — Calling all traditional music and dance enthusiasts to take part in PattyFest 2024.

In keeping with the music and dance festival, PattyFest 2024 will be held June 1 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at East Fairmont High. Admission is free.

PattyFest features on-stage musical performances, instrumental workshops, impromptu jam sessions, and an evening square dance from 7-9 p.m. What’s more, there’s food, fellowship and family fun.

“PattyFest is like a big family gathering of folks who love traditional old-time music,” festival president Jeanie Howard said. “But it’s also a welcoming place for interested and curious people who may not know the difference between a mountain dulcimer and a hammered dulcimer, but who might want to find out. We invite everyone to come and spend part or all of the day with us.”

PattyFest celebrates the legacy of the late Patty Looman, described by those who knew and learned from her as mentor, teacher, song-catcher, player and friend. The festival website declares: “Because of Patty, old-time, mountain dulcimer, and hammered dulcimer music is alive and well today in West Virginia and far beyond.”

On-stage performances will showcase an assortment of area musicians — individuals as well as ensembles of many shapes and sizes — who share their passion for many different styles of traditional music.

Workshops offer comfortable opportunities to experience such musical instruments as guitar, fiddle, banjo, hammered dulcimer, lap dulcimer, autoharp, tin whistle and spoons.

Jam sessions bring people together for the pure joy of sharing familiar music with one another.

All are invited to join in the Saturday evening square dance, accompanied by an all-star band of area musicians.

The festival is presented by PattyFest Inc., a not-for-profit 501©(3) corporation, which also sponsors the annual Gardner Winter Music Festival in Morgantown.
