MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Sunday, May 26th, marks the anniversary of Jimmie Rodgers’s death, and a few of his fans put together a Wreath-Laying Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery in Meridian near Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Jimmie Rodgers was not only the father of Country music but also American music, as his passion for creating music, singing, and performing grew throughout the City of Meridian and surrounding areas.

“The Jimmie Rodgers Wreath-Laying Ceremony used to be a real big part of the festival, and I don’t think they have done it for the past few years, and so we were talking yesterday some of my musician buddies, and we can go up there and do it ourselves, you know this is the anniversary of Jimmie Rodger’s death, and we just decided well we can just go up here, sing a few songs in honor of Jimmie and remember him and place a wreath on Jimmie’s grave, and there is no way to overshoot how big a deal Jimmie was, he was the father of American music and not just Country music,” says Britt Gully, a fan of Jimmie Rodgers music.

This was a special moment as he inspired so many artists all around.

“He started it for everybody. He was in the County Music Hall of Fame, he was the first one inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, he was one of the first ones in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he’s in the Blue’s Hall of Fame, he’s in the Songwriter Hall of Fame, his picture was on a postage stamp, he’s got the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, Jimmie Rodgers was the biggest of deals and there is no way to overstate it, a boy from right here in Meridian, Mississippi gave music to the world, he took over the world with music,” Gully says.

This was a special moment for those in attendance as his legacy, even with the Jimmie Rodgers Music Festival, will continue to live on forever.
