Loren “Butch” Larson

April 17, 1941 – July 1, 2024

U.S. Veteran

Loren “Butch” Clyde Larson, 83, passed away on July 1, 2024, at St. Gerard’s Community of Care in Hankinson, ND, under the care of CHI Health at Home. He was born on April 17, 1941, to Clyde and Irma (Forward) Larson in Milnor, ND, where he spent his childhood and graduated from high school. He married Elaine Murack on July 13, 1964.

Butch and Elaine moved to Seaside, CA in 1964 where he served in the US Army for two years and during that time, served in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, they moved to Fargo where they had their first daughter, Dana. They made Wyndmere their home in 1971 and had two more children, Dawn and Daren. In Wyndmere, he owned and operated Larson Processing and Lockers for 36 years, 1 month, 2 weeks, and 1 day. Coupled with his love for horses, he carried on the Larson family rodeo tradition by hosting the Wyndmere Rodeo for 20 years. Butch also served as the mayor of Wyndmere for many years.

Upon his retirement, he became well known in the area for being the “ticket master.” Rarely did you find him without a pocket full of raffle tickets to sell, setting records in ticket sales with the VFW. You could also find mini Snickers bars in his pockets, making him popular with kids in town and at church. He had a driving route around Wyndmere that you could set your clocks by, most days ending at the Black Pelican for an E&J and game of dice. Family was important to Butch, and he made sure to talk to his three kids nearly every day. He loved Elaine dearly and early on, she taught him how to dance, with their favorite being the Jitterbug. If there was a dance floor nearby, they were on it. Butch loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending their events, teaching them to fish at the cabin on Lake Elsie, or telling stories, usually resulting in many laughs. He was a proud husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa.
