CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern and The Citadel announced today (July 3) that the schools’ football programs will begin an official rivalry which will be named the “Lowcountry Boil Bowl” beginning with the Saturday, August 31, 2024, matchup hosted by the Buccaneers. Part of this year’s contest will feature the programs squaring off for a trophy filled to the brim with Lowcountry Boil which will be presented to the victor following the game’s conclusion.

The name for the rivalry will be based on the local food specialty that people in Charleston gather around regularly to create and share memories. The big one-pot meal was allegedly invented by Richard Gay during the 1960s, owner of a seafood company from a small town called Frogmore. He originally called it “Frogmore Stew” as homage to his hometown, but over the years the dish has become more popularly known as “Lowcountry Boil” because of the key ingredient, shrimp, which is a principal product of the Lowcountry and Charleston communities.

Additionally, the teams will have multiple players complete a service project in conjunction with one another in the weeks leading up to the season-opening game. Each year that the universities compete against each other, the host school will be tasked with selecting the project as they look to serve the local Charleston community. Part of the day’s festivities will include a fun competition between members of each of the programs with a shrimp eating contest expected to serve as it for the first year of it.

This season’s matchup will mark the 14th official matchup between the schools in program history. The Citadel currently leads the matchup with a record of 7-3. It would be a narrower margin of 7-6, however, three CSU wins in the series were vacated from during the 2014 and 2015 seasons due to NCAA violations.

The Citadel won the first three matchups in the series with the first-ever contest coming on November 21, 2002, by a score of 53-19. The Bucs claimed their first victory in it on September 9, 2006. Following back-to-back wins in the series from the Bulldogs in 2007 and 2012, Charleston Southern went on the longest winning streak in series history taking four in a row between the 2013-2015 seasons under then head coach Jamey Chadwell. The Citadel then snapped the streak with victories in 2018 and 2019. The Buccaneers claimed the win in the most recent installment of it on September 11, 2021, by a final score of 38-21.
